Presented here as a fully onchain PDF with light editorial cleanup.\n\nIn late 2020 and early 2021, one of the major turning points in convincing a new wave of crypto-native collectors that tokenized art held lasting value was the advent of Art Blocks, an Ethereum-based platform for generative art.\nMany newer participants at the time expressed that while they remained skeptical of most tokenized media, onchain generative art—with its promise of permanence and immutability—made much more sense as a store of value. For many skeptics, it was an “aha” moment.\nSimultaneously, art minted on SuperRare—which pioneered many of the early best practices for tokenized fine art—became home to many coveted works, including those by XCOPY and Robbie Barrat, to name just two household names.\nFrom its earliest days, SuperRare’s shared contract strongly emphasized the importance of an artist’s minting wallet, establishing a direct cryptographic signature across all of their works regardless of the underlying contract.\nHistorically, SuperRare’s shared-contract works have also emphasized immutable metadata, ensuring collectors can acquire works without concern that their metadata may later change.\nThis shared onchain environment helped foster a cultural melting pot, creating powerful network effects that remain legendary to this day.\nArt Blocks remains particularly interesting because the degree to which its earliest works are “fully onchain” is still debated today. Unlike SuperRare or Forever Library, Art Blocks works are not minted directly by the artist’s wallet, but rather through the Art Blocks platform on the artist’s behalf.\nThe point, however, is that these two examples serve as historical guideposts for what crypto-native collectors have consistently demonstrated they value: permanence, provenance, and immutability.\n\nMany people wonder why the NFT space continues to limp along outside of periodic bursts of market activity.\nIn many ways, I believe we can trace this back to the gradual abandonment of many of the principles and practices that originally made crypto art compelling to serious collectors.\nManifold has been one of the most impactful infrastructure providers in the NFT ecosystem, bringing creator-owned contracts to the masses. In many situations, this has been an incredibly valuable advancement.\nIn my view, however, the widespread adoption of creator-owned contracts through tools such as Manifold also shifted the culture of the space in several significant ways.\nCultural momentum became fragmented as creators increasingly minted from isolated personal contracts rather than within shared onchain environments.\nAt the same time, mutable metadata became the default expectation, placing less emphasis on permanence and immutability.\nIf I had to guess, this design choice was likely motivated by user experience, as well as uncertainty surrounding the long-term resilience of storage protocols such as Arweave. If the storage layer were ever to fail, creators could simply update their metadata.\nI would argue, however, that this convenience came at the expense of one of the core principles that makes onchain media attractive as a long-term store of value: immutability.\nIf we step back to the question of permanence, there is an incredibly passionate community dedicated to fully onchain media—and for good reason.\nNFTs whose metadata and media both reside entirely onchain are naturally among the most robust and resilient acquisitions a collector can make.\nAt the same time, only a relatively limited range of artistic expression can realistically be stored entirely onchain. My expectation is that, even a decade from now, the overwhelming majority of tokenized media will still rely on offchain storage for its media assets.\n\nBalancing these competing priorities has been my contribution to the evolution of tokenized media as a store of value: Forever Library.\n\nForever Library is an open, shared NFT minting contract deployed on Ethereum mainnet.\nThe contract is immutable and contains no administrative controls.\nWhen minting a token, creators have a 24-hour period during which metadata may be adjusted before it becomes permanently frozen.\nThis allows creators to customize their metadata or add backup storage solutions beyond our default configuration.\nThe editing period also enables unique capabilities through Forever Library’s external renderer architecture.\nExternal renderers allow creators to build sophisticated code-based onchain works, as well as compose or daisy-chain additional smart contracts alongside the Forever Library contract itself.\nThis architecture has already enabled features such as fully onchain image and audio NFTs that any creator can mint through Forever Library.\nAdditionally, every Forever Library token stores its metadata fully onchain within the token URI itself. There is no external URL pointing to metadata hosted elsewhere.\nWhile most media files will continue to require decentralized offchain storage, the provenance and descriptive information surrounding those works should be preserved onchain as permanently as possible.\nForever Library may well be one of the most capable open minting tools available to creators today.\nMore important than any individual feature, however, is the fact that Forever Library is a shared contract.\nSplintering our creative community across thousands of isolated contracts has weakened many of the network effects that once fueled crypto art’s rapid growth.\nJust as the early crypto art movement flourished through shared environments, I believe we can begin reversing this trend by once again embracing shared spaces where artists, collectors, and builders naturally congregate.\nThese environments create cultural ecosystems that become greater than the sum of their parts.\nOur vision for Forever Library is informed by these historical lessons. We aim to empower creators while ensuring their work can be collected as durable, permanent stores of creative value.\nForever Library exists to demonstrate that, regardless of where an artist mints, their wallet provenance should remain the strongest signal of authenticity.\nThis is undoubtedly a bold idea to pursue today. Even so, I believe it is worth creating this option and returning greater agency to onchain creators after much of the infrastructure that once prioritized permanence has disappeared.\nAt the very least, it offers a different path from today’s platforms, many of which remain largely unresponsive to collector demand for the features Forever Library was built to provide.\n\nWhether you are a collector seeking exceptional work minted with long-term permanence in mind, an artist seeking flexible tools to create the most durable NFTs you’ve ever minted, a builder looking to build atop an open base-layer minting protocol, or simply someone who believes culture becomes stronger through shared networks,\n\nForever Library welcomes you with open arms.","animation_url":"ipfs://QmNvUUhMUF5ngXEZuHbUagxc3ahvSCyAt9v5wN3aGEpUVs","image":"ipfs://QmbsujiD9knE5FV1ATLuymA8C9JmZtuoSi9wgA8p65DGLy","attributes":[{"trait_type":"Artist","value":"Ture"},{"trait_type":"Media Type","value":"PDF"},{"trait_type":"Creator","value":"0x1290F0b28f014363A81C3C7C2DFf5f7517499E44"},{"trait_type":"Minting Tool","value":"Forever Library V2"}]}
