Growing up, there was only one arcade in town and it sat next to my local high school. When I was old enough to go on my own and I walked in, the familiar ding of the machines and the clickety-clack of buttons overwhelmed me. I had finally discovered somewhere I belonged; a place I had been searching for.
And yet, I quickly learned that these were not my people, this was not my place. I was looked at with disdain, left alone in silence. Here I thought a group of people who were typically made fun of would be accepting but that was not the case. I played one game of Arkanoid and left with my head down, never to return.
I have looked upon arcades and games with a sense of longing ever since. This artwork speaks to me because it represents the arcade I have been playing in my entire adult life, the one I created in my head, the one that is truly mine.
