This version has re-imagined visual design (still undergoing some iteration) and also removes the reliance on DAI. This removes a significant barrier to entry - now a user simply needs ETH and a web3 wallet like Metamask to post.\n\nSo what can SmokeSignal offer?\n\nThink of SmokeSignal's use-case as delivering some of the value of Medium and Reddit: As with Medium, this can be used as a place to publish your articles and get a reliable link to pass around to others. As with Reddit, others can comment on any post in a nested fashion and in topics, facilitating multidimensional conversations on some given topic. But there are some crucial differences:\n- Anyone can post at any time: deplatforming any user is impossible, and there are no moderators.\n- All posts are permanent, being inscribed into the Ethereum blockchain. Even the developers can't remove them!\n\nAdditionally, posts can be essentially upvoted by anyone by burning more ETH for it; or they can donate to the author with the \"tip\" functionality, which just sends the ETH directly to the author. I'll write more about why this is so exciting in a later post.\n\nNow, as of the time of this post, the gas costs of this tool are... rather prohibitive. At current Ehereum gas prices, the smallest post can cost as much as $30. Holy jumping Jesus Christ. If I stop writing here and post, that cost goes up to... $40. So while the cost doesn't scale incredibly with length, the base cost is very, very steep.\n\nIt's conceivable that someone might still find it useful: permanent, pseudonymous, public posts is quite an offering in today's age of censorship. But obviously it's the next issue to tackle.
