<h1>A Few Use Cases of Cryptocurrency That Seem Inevitable</h1> <p>I think its always a bit crazy to predict the future, but its also a fun exercise to do. I have definitely blogged and been very wrong on a number of technology predictions (what ever happened to Google Wave& ). Anyways, with that caveat, here are a few predictions that I think feel like inevitable use cases of cryptocurrency that proves it has huge value even if it does not achieve everything everyone claims it can.</p> <h3>Replace wire and ACH transfers</h3> <p>Bank of America wire fees, https://www.bankofamerica.com/content/documents/deposits/service/pdf/Domestic-international-wire-transfers-info-sheet.pdf Right now when we send ACH transfers for our business it takes usually between 25 days. If we send wire transfers to arrive the same day we pay a $30 fee. Cryptocurrency provides an obvious value here. Right now you can stream a show instantly from Netflix but it takes days to send money via banks.</p> <p>Right now the bank transfer goes through but takes a few days to really confirm. With cryptocurrency the transfer goes through right away, with Bitcoin right now the confirmation time is about 10 minutes. This is already a significant improvement. Also, currently Bitcoin transaction fees are between 2 cents and 10 cents, 300x-1500x cheaper than a wire transfer.</p> <p>So even if you just had two side by side accounts where you transfer USD to BTC, send a transfer to another bank that has the same side-by-side setup, you have made an instant low fee transaction which arrives right away and is confirmed in 10 minutes. In terms of currency risk, you have really only a minute and maximum 10 minutes of currency risk, which is not a lot. I think if the banks built this as a product where they had a pool of USD and BTC, the transaction really is instantaneous so has no currency risk. Right now looking at todays chart, even as volatile as bitcoin is, it seems to move less than 0.1% per block (again this is high relatively, but its already at this point today, which is still cheaper for many transactions).</p> <p>So if you can enable fast to instant cheap payments between parties who do not know each other, what else can you do?</p> <h3>Replace credit card transactions and fees</h3> <p>Right now credit card fees are around 24% of the transaction value (source via square), maybe 3% average. For large payments, the fees are quite large. For example a $500 payment may cost $15 in processing fees. This is just a tax on the whole system, and a reason why some small businesses still want to use cash. However it is convenient to use cards. If cryptocurrency could replace credit cards, or move fees down to say 0.1% of the transaction or even a fixed fee of 1030 cents, this is huge savings. This could be 30x savings on fees.</p> <p>In 2016 in the US, the credit card transaction volume was $5.936 trillion, which at around 3% is $180 billion in credit card fees. The total global card volume was $26.043 trillion [page 9], so could be around $780 billion in fees. The fees here are rough estimates but it shows you how valuable lowering transaction fees is. Again even a 50% reduction  which cryptocurrency is more than capable of doing  is massive.</p> <h3>Checks</h3> <p>It seems to me anywhere where you use check payments should be replaced with cryptocurrency. Im not sure if that will happen, because that workflow is so ingrained, but again, it is crazy that you can send so many things instantly across the world, but the most trusted way for many people to send money is to send a piece of paper across the world through the mail, which then you have to take to your bank or scan, when you are just trying to send the account numbers. Also, they are very insecure in that it shares your bank account information (yes, there are safeguards in some ways, but overall it is not secure). As an example, if someone could help schools switch to non-check payments it would save the education system so much money.</p> <h3>Easy international payments</h3> <p>International payments are very expensive now, and cryptocurrency payments seem like a way to speed that up and make it cheaper.</p> <h3>Payroll</h3> <p>Right now our payroll takes 24 days because of ACH processing times. You could switch this to same day, and allow people to get paid faster.</p> <h3>Real estate purchases</h3> <p>Cryptocurrency can handle large payment amounts well, so I think real estate transactions will move to cryptocurrencies more frequently.</p> <p>Those are a few ideas on some possible use cases of cryptocurrency, but still curious to see how it all develops.</p>

Mainly, it&rsquo;s normally not even possible to verify for yourself if the information is valid. Say you find an graph with an appealing insight? Is it true? Hard to know. It&rsquo;s much easier to just click retweet.</p> <p>Twitter could add an easy way for people to provide sources and also bubble tweets that are sourced higher up.</p> <p>For example, I found an interesting stat from Pew Research that 74% globally have no confidence in Trump in international matters. Normally I could just screenshot and share. But then it&rsquo;s not possible for someone to easily find the source of the data. <h1>My Top Three 5&ndash;10 Year Trends of&nbsp;2017</h1> <h2>1. Computer Science Education</h2> <h2>2. Distributed Work</h2> <h2>3. Cryptocurrency/Blockchain</h2> <p><br />These are three of the trends I think will continue to really emerge in the next five years. They are already here &mdash; but mostly all on the fringes, even if they have received some attention.</p> <h2>1. Computer Science Education</h2> <p>We&rsquo;re all in on this one at&nbsp;<a href="http://codehs.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-href="http://codehs.com">CodeHS</a> &mdash; the top comprehensive platform to help schools teach computer science. 5 years ago there were very few K12 schools teaching computer science. Now we are seeing a number of states start to develop standards, a few start to require it, and lots of schools start to teach it. It&rsquo;s still not obvious yet, and even if high schools do offer it they usually just have one class &mdash; I think in 5&ndash;10 years it will be obvious that schools should teach computer science, the states will require it, and you&rsquo;ll see lots of progress in US and international programs around K12 computer science curriculum, professional development and training and software. We hope in that time significantly more funding goes to schools and districts to implement computer science courses to make this a reality. I&rsquo;ll guess over 80% of US high schools will teach computer science in 5&ndash;10 years and 20+ states will require it.</p> <h2>2. Distributed Work</h2> <p>If you google around on this, you&rsquo;ll see many more companies are starting to support distributed work. We started to really support distributed work at CodeHS about 5 months ago, and now have team members in 10 cities. As we researched this trend, we found some great resources about it, but they still weren&rsquo;t very readily available. We&rsquo;d see a few of the same companies, and same bloggers and a few books. It&rsquo;s common for larger companies to have many offices (though they don&rsquo;t really think of themselves as a distributed company &mdash; they probably should). However for most small companies I know &mdash; they aren&rsquo;t distributed. I think over the next 5&ndash;10 years distributed work is going to become even more common. You&rsquo;ll see lots more software and companies popping up to support it, it will be a clear benefit to employees, and I think both the millenials and the older generations will want it, but for different reasons. I hope we reach a tipping point on video calls as well (Zoom is pretty good&hellip; but I&rsquo;m hoping for something 5x better&nbsp;:) ). My guess is distributed companies will become increasingly common over the next 5&ndash;10 years.</p> <h2>3. Cryptocurrency/Blockchain</h2> <p>Bitcoin started 8 years ago in 2009. It had a number of big spikes in the last few years but really got lots of attention this year as it jumped above $10,000 and reached a $20,000 all-time high. There&rsquo;s now a flurry of cryptocurrencies, the overall cryptocurrency market cap is&nbsp;<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-href="https://coinmarketcap.com/">$565 billion</a> &mdash; Ethereum increased 8000%+ this year and Bitcoin increased 1300%+ this year. With the rapid increase and interest in Ethereum,&nbsp;<a href="https://venturebeat.com/2017/08/07/icos-have-raised-more-than-1-3-billion-so-far-in-2017/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-href="https://venturebeat.com/2017/08/07/icos-have-raised-more-than-1-3-billion-so-far-in-2017/">ICOs raised over a billion dollars in 2017</a>. However, cryptocurrency and blockchain is still on the fringes. The recent spikes brought in a number of speculators, but most people aren&rsquo;t using it for every day transactions. Though ICOs raised a lot of money, they&rsquo;re not yet funding a large number of companies.
