Box Light Studies is an investigation into light, color and geometry. For Zach Lieberman, the realization that light is one of the most important themes and materials to his life and practice suffuses this body of work. He engages with and produces imagery that hinges on illumination, where color, form, and rhythm are explored through its lens, and where the essence of emotional experience can be captured and transmitted.
Inspired by seemingly quotidian experiences— sun playing on broken glass, the prismatic rays of car headlights in the darkness, the sudden glint of skyscrapers as the last light fades, Lieberman harnesses their collective ephemerality to power his vault into the eternal. The difficulty of rendering light in his chosen medium, code, is deftly submerged under the elegance of his forms. Per Lieberman, “I create images that change how I see, with the hope that they may change how others see”. Box Light Studies does exactly this, bending perception around planes, sending eyebeams into the darkness in the hope, nay, expectation that they will be received and interpreted.
