# [ V2.3 ] - Build 2 Skateparks in Uganda

#### Backing:
This proposal is backed by a group of 20+ real skaters from Gnars DAO, Olympic Team, and others who are committed to ensuring funds are used effectively to support the community and promote the Nouns brand.
By redirecting funds to create public skateparks in Uganda, Nouns DAO can achieve a more significant and lasting impact, promoting skateboarding culture and Nouns branding while supporting community development. Nouns would be writing the final chapter of a long-lasting struggle that has been watched by the skateboarding world for decades.

## Overview:
Create a high-impact public skatepark in Kampala featuring Noggles-themed obstacles to promote skateboarding and the Nouns DAO brand. Also, refurbish Uganda Society Skatepark. This project aims to foster community engagement, inspire youth, and provide a safe space for skateboarding, aligning with the DAO's vision of creating broad public good.

> Uganda skateboarding society is a non-profit organization which uses skateboarding as a tool to empower youth and kids in Uganda. We were formed in 2011 by Gose Gerald in Mukono.

### 2. Kampala Initiative
The initiative's approach to diversity includes welcoming skaters of all backgrounds, genders, ages, and cultures, showcasing the inclusive nature of skateboarding. Through community engagement activities like training sessions and outreach programs, the initiative has successfully fostered a sense of camaraderie and belonging among the youth, helping to deter them from risky behaviors associated with drugs and gangs.
A local advocate's perspective highlights that the real, meaningful way to support the community is by **building a skatepark**. This skatepark is seen not just as a facility for recreation but as a crucial tool for education, skill development, and humanitarian growth. The advocate was moved by the urgent needs of the community, recognizing that **providing skateboards and shoes was insufficient**. Instead, the construction of a skatepark would leave a significant, lasting impact, empowering the youth and offering them a platform to develop their talents and skills. This skatepark aims to create a sense of pride and achievement, allowing the community to feel seen and supported through the sport of skateboarding.

#### Context of Garcias Involvement with Kampala Project:
> *I got involved in this project and took the initiative to build a skatepark because I saw the cry for help in a social media video in January. It moved me deeply, and I initially thought of bringing skates and shoes, but I realized this wouldn't address their real needs. I understood that building a skatepark would genuinely help and provide something significant for them. Over the past five months, I've been in touch with them, pricing materials, and converting costs to our currency to understand what we need. I have faith it will happen. I'll continue volunteering my expertise in skatepark construction to make this dream come true. I know how important this will be for the community, as they are finding self-worth and visibility through skateboarding. We've faced difficulties and prejudice as skaters, but their reality is much harsher. This is not just building a skatepark but creating a vital tool for education and humanitarian development.*

#### Motivation:
Building a skatepark in Uganda for its skateboarders is crucial for engaging youth, promoting physical health, and fostering creativity. It provides a safe space for self-expression and community building, positively impacting local economies and social cohesion.
The Uganda Skateboard Society (USS) was founded in 2006 by Jackson Mubiru, who discovered skateboarding through a friend's gift from Europe. Recognizing its potential to empower youth, he established the USS and built Uganda's first skatepark in Kitintale in 2008 with donated materials and local volunteer efforts. Over the years, the skatepark has attracted international support and become a vital community hub. Constructing a new skatepark will further the USS's mission, offering more opportunities for youth and nurturing the local skateboarding culture.

Based on community feedback, the current proposal to fund a private skatepark and documentary lacks clear deliverables and public impact, appears to be a misuse of the DAO's funds, and has several budgetary concerns:
1. **Public vs. Private Benefit:** Investing in a public skatepark benefits a broader community, whereas funding a private skatepark and documentary benefits a select few, mainly the celebrity involved.
2. **Cost Justification:** The current proposal's high costs, including maintenance of a private park and high salaries, are seen as unnecessary and poorly justified. Public projects provide better value for money.
3. **Transparency and Accountability:** The detailed cost breakdown and transparent goals of this public project ensure accountability and long-term impact, addressing concerns about misuse of funds and lack of oversight.

- 20 new skateboards

- 40 pairs of shoes

#### Impact Metrics:
- **Public Access:** Provide a safe, free-to-use skatepark for the community.
- **Community Engagement:** Host regular workshops and events to promote skateboarding.
- **Brand Visibility:** Integrate Nouns branding through obstacles and events to enhance global reach.
- **Position Nouns with a few other giant brands** that were able to temporarily help like: Adidas, Supreme & SkatePark Project.

- **Promotes Public Good:** Unlike private projects, this skatepark benefits the broader community.
- **Sustainable Impact:** Provides long-term benefits with continuous community engagement.
- **Transparency and Accountability:** Clear cost breakdown and public access ensure accountability.
## No one but the Constructors, architects and the Video Crew will be compensated for work on this proposal. Travel costs might be applied but that's it.
*At least 8 skaters from those mentioned above will be signers of a multisig. It's Deliver or Return. It can be divided into 3 phases according to project phase deliveries.
*Any unforeseen obstacles to this proposal will result in the funds being returned to the treasury, and an alternative location will be selected. Ongoing communication with Kampala skaters and the Uganda Skateboarding Society has been in place since last year, coordinated by Gnars DAO members and the chosen skatepark architects.
