Okiku is a classic Japanese ghost story, first appearing in folklore in the late 1700s. The tale revolves around a young woman named Okiku, who was employed as a servant in the mansion of Aoyama Satoemon, a samurai lord in Himeji. One night, her master's daughter, Umegae-hime, came to her for help with an article of clothing that had been torn. Out of fear that he would be punished for being careless with his possessions and embarrassed by his daughter's lack of sewing skills, she implored Okiku to fix it privately and without the knowledge of her master. Despite the risk to her own safety, Okiku graciously agreed and attempted to mend it without anyone knowing.
