# Glitch III - Art Residency Summary
The third Glitch Art Residency was framed around the theme of **“Alternative Intelligences”**. It ran for two weeks, from October 23rd to November 5th, at the majestic 18th century Chateau Feÿ.
This year, the Glitch residency brought together more than **60 people**, mostly artists and technologists working at the intersection of blockchain, AI and VR. The residents were mainly from Europe and North America, with also people from Asia and South America.
The underlying rationale of GLITCH is to push the boundaries of crypto art, i.e. to inspire artists and engineers to collaborate in order to explore the use of **blockchain as a medium**, rather than as a mere transaction layer.
Ultimately, GLITCH aims to create an **extitutional community**, an artistic collective gathering people from all parts of the world who share the value of collaboration and artistic exploration. All Glitchers are polymaths, open minded and curious people, eager to collaborate on crazy projects and initiatives together. Eventually, Glitch might spawn a **new artistic movement** around the concept of “blockchain as a medium”.
This year, our community of artists and technologists has made significant strides in blockchain art, establishing new partnerships, launching innovative projects, and pushing the boundaries of blockchain and crypto art.

Below are the key developments that came out of this third edition:
* **GLITCH Website**: A new [GLITCH website](https://multimodal.art/glitch/) is underway, aiming to become a central place for collaboration and creation for all Glitchers around the world.
* **GLITCH Protocol**: We have developed the [Glitch protocol](https://github.com/GlitchverseProtocol/scaffold-glitch/blob/glitch-protocol/packages/hardhat/contracts/GlitchProtocol.sol) to facilitate artist collaboration by allowing artworks to interact with one another in an asynchronous way through smart contract communication. When a new work is created using the Glitch protocol, or when someone interacts with a work relying on the protocol, data about the work is recorded on the blockchain, so that other artworks relying on the Glitch protocol can react to it. The code of the glitch protocol is available on [github](https://github.com/GlitchverseProtocol/scaffold-glitch/blob/glitch-protocol/packages/hardhat/contracts/GlitchProtocol.sol), as well as a [demo renderer](https://github.com/GlitchverseProtocol/scaffold-glitch/blob/glitch-protocol/packages/nextjs/test-data/threejs-audio.js) which pulls data from all the tokens connected to glitch protocol.

* **L3 Collaboration**: Multiple startups at Glitch, including Syndicate and Memento, are collaborating on Layer 3s to push the boundaries of on-chain art and storing large amounts of on-chain data.
* **GLITCH Catalog**: Efforts to revive the GLITCH catalog, a compilation of glitch art history and works, are moving forward.

* **Off-Grid AI Manifesto**: We drafted the [Off-grid AI manifesto](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uXC0pfiONToH9MXmx-YYVMY9vW95r2vklAlP1cAaBOs/edit) that challenges the traditional boundaries of AI Art. Indeed, today, it is difficult as an artist to use AI in order to create something really “novel” because of the limitations imposed on the promptable latent space, which constrain generative AI model to hyper-aesthetics or hyper-realistic outputs. The manifesto invites off-grid AI artists to escape from the imposed constraints of these models, and reach out outside of what the model is trained to deliver.
* **Mancy Manifesto**: We drafted the [Mancy manifesto](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qAgGEjztjNrkLxkH8R2X0ezhxc9iuYTMFkmXGP6z6H8/edit#heading=h.tm17gdgmm2fz), introducing a new artistic movement, focusing on the creation of synthetic life through artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. It’s not about bio-Art, where artists use life to create art, it’s about using technology to breath life into something that would be inanimate otherwise.

* **GLITCH @ Fey Arts Festival**: We’re already preparing for an upcoming arts festival, [Fey Arts](https://en.fey-arts.com/), that will exhibit many of the works made by GLITCH. A group of 10 Glitchers will be there showcasing their works at the intersection of art and technology, in a fully natural setting.
* **GLITCH on Mars sub-residency**: Led by Gene Kogan and Xander Steenbrugge, this project extends glitch art exploration to Bombay Beach, in California, bringing lots of glitchers to explore Artificial Intelligence in a Martian environment.
In addition, planning for Glitch IV is underway!
