> Let's keep Nerman alive. Happy to see a decentralized, nounish team being formed. Happy to collaborate on UX/UI design work.
>
If anyone isnt familiar with Nekofar / Milad / Lulu I encourage you to ask around. Interactions with him are always challenging and make building in public frustrating. I have not received any funds from client incentives and have no claim to any funds held by Nouncil.
Most of his points are disingenuous. Nekofar has used Nerman governance extensively for a long time, proudly maintaining a 100% participation rate in Nouncil over hundreds of polls. He builds with the APIs we offer, participates in communities Ive founded, and after leaving feedback on this proposal went to Nouncil discord and voted on all of the recent Nouns DAO proposals through Nerman. He is fully aware of the bots utility.
He makes one valid point. I will not work with him. Nekofar can join the communities I create, use the tools I build, but he is not welcome on any team I am part of.
Nerman gov is targeting Discord as a platform, rather than trying to build another Agora or Tally. The justifications for this positioning are in the proposal and I stand by them.
Hey lilfrog 🐸🐸
Actual infra costs (hosting and other services) are minimal. The $9000 is mostly covering time to do all the various things necessary for stability and growth over the next 9 months. This includes regular code maintenance and fixing breaking bugs, providing support to existing active communities and addressing any issues that arise, and working with new communities to facilitate governance formation. This also includes the big unknown of Nouns DAO contract upgrades, which we have always implemented quickly.
In short, all of the work we put in outside of actual feature development.
Hey Volky 👋
The rebranding is still a work in progress, nothing to release yet but I have a lot of fun creating brands and am also excited for the opportunity to do so again.
These features should be complete in 3-4 months, rolling them out as we go.
Regarding the dashboards, appreciate the push. They are complete but I do need to write a summary of what was done and the future direction of that project.
# Nerman - Discord Governance Bot
## TLDR
Our Nounish discord Governance bot, currently called Nerman, is automating governance for various groups like Nouncil, enabling them to participate in Nouns DAO from Discord. We are asking for $58,000 USDC to develop much needed features for the bot, and $9,000 USDC streamed over the rest of 2025 to cover general hosting / maintenance / support for the year.
## PRELUDE
The Nerman governance bot has been operating for over 2 years. This bot provides Discord communities a formal, automated governance process while also facilitating their participation in DAOs like Nouns and Lil Nouns.

Just under 40 Nouns votes are currently represented by communities using this bot to coordinate. It has been used by groups such as Nouncil, Nouns Esports, Pizza DAO, Builder DAO, Lil Nouns, and Nouns Amigos.
**Bot Stats**
- active in 25+ Discords
- 50+ governance channels registered
- 3000+ polls created
- 9000+ registered voters
- 35,000+ individual votes cast
## CASE STUDY: NOUNCIL
Nouncil, a council of Nounish builders, has been using this bot to automate participation in Nouns DAO for over 2 years. This automation helped Nouncil's members (almost 100 members at its peak) vote on over 500 Nouns proposals and maintain one of the highest participation rates in the DAO. Nouners and proposers regularly come to Nouncil discord to follow the live votes and discussion that happen in the Nouncil governance channels. You can explore this in the [Nouncil Discord](https://discord.gg/2eRJDmBeqq) - see the #nouncil-votes channel.
## OUR VISION
We are building an offchain, decentralized governance solution for Discord communities. This Discord-centric approach minimizes friction for voter participation and allows for fast iteration on functionality. Discord has 200 million monthly active users, and this bot could serves as an entry point for them to explore decentralized governance and community formation. Think of this as an offchain governance laboratory for offchain communities.
Our code is open source and our governance wisdom all public. Everything we develop will eventually translate into onchain governance infrastructure. For some communities, a Discord bot is sufficient. However, for communities who grow large treasuries or have increasingly contentious decisions, the trustless nature of onchain governance will become an obvious next step. In essence, this governance bot aims to onboard users into decentralized governance, and then to crypto.
## WHATS NEXT?
There are three priorities moving forward:
- **LIFE SUPPORT** Communities are actively using this bot, and some work and maintenance is needed to keep it running over time. This includes fixing bugs, adjustments when Nouns contracts are updated, and keeping depenencies updated to the latest versions.
- **BASIC FEATURES** These are straightforward features that communities have already requested.
- When a Nouns DAO proposal is cancelled, automatically cancel the poll in the appropriate Discord.
- Implement a voting delay, to mirror Nouns DAO's, so voting doesn't start right away. Prior to voting, voters can discuss the proposal during the DAO's editing period.
- For each user report the percentage of their votes with reason (VWR) and abstains, so communities can see the data on these and have rules around minimum requirements.
- Add more helpful proposal info to Nouncil and Nouns polls, including Prop Spend and links to multiple DAO clients instead of nouns.wtf.
- **ADVANCED FEATURES** We will discuss with communities and decide on a few more ambitious features to implement, looking to complete the most impactful ones that can be done within this proposal scope. These are some options:
- **FORMALIZE PSEUDO-ANON SETTINGS:** Currently Poll Channels can only be created as public or anon. Nouncil uses custom pseudo-anon functionality, where votes are private but published if the user leaves a reason. We need to formalize our Pseudo-Anon code to make this feature available for any other community who wants it.
- **ADMIN CONFIG TOOLS:** We need to build a simple UI for communities to manage their own governance configuration values, like voting roles, quorum, and membership requirements and calculations. Currently an admin on our team has to change them.
- **GENERALIZED API** Make a general version of our API ([https://api.nouncil.wtf](https://api.nouncil.wtf)) so all communities can access their data and build with it outside of Discord. Currently only Nouncil can. We also want to add more information to the API as well, including more detailed poll and vote data that respects communities governance privacy configs.
- **AUTOMATED MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT** Automated membership management. To join Nouncil people have to manually apply, a Nouncillor has to create a poll to vote to approve that user, and an Admin has to provide the role. As well, if a person leaves, or their stats drop below a required threshold, the role needs to be manually removed. This can be automated and provided as a feature to all communities.
- **REBRAND** Over the last 3 years we have built a suite of tools, bots, and websites under the Nerman brand. The brand was fun, but having so much different projects under the name is confusing. The governance bot has seen the most sustained use and has the most potential for growth. We want to create a new brand for this bot, one that captures our vision and can be understood by the broader Discord userbase.
- New brand and governance focused website
- Clear documentation so groups can permissionlessly add the bot and configure goverance in their own Discords
Moving forward, Nerman is going to serve as a guide to onchain communities, and continue to be the brand for our bots posting Nouns events in various Discords. Development for the rest of the Nerman ecosystem, including [Nerman Feeds](https://nerman.biz/), [Noun O'Clock bot](https://nounoclock.wtf/), our [SDKs](https://github.com/JoeCars/Nerman.js) and other older Nerman projects, is not included in this proposal.
## DECENTRALIZED NOUNISH TEAM
Previously this project has been developed entirely by our internal team. We want to decentralize the project and guide it towards an open source, collaborative, community project. For this proposal we will continue to code some of the features ourselves. At the same time, we will onboard devs from the Nounish community to take on bounties and develop features. We will be providing leadership and quality control for all of this work, and plan to manage the project in public on Github.
We will be very selective in who we work with, and currently have plans with [Dot](http://[Dot](https://github.com/EricDevito)), creator of Lil Nouns, [Benbodhi](http://[Benbodhi](https://github.com/benbodhi)), Nounish renaissance man, and [James Young](https://github.com/jamesyoung), founder of Collab.Land.
**Core Team** [Joel Cares](https://github.com/JoeCars/) - project lead [Han](https://github.com/sobhan-m) - lead dev
## BUDGET
**$9,000 USDC streamed through 2025**
- 2025 LIFE SUPPORT - $9,000
**$58,000 USDC paid upfront**
- BASIC FEATURES - $21,750
- ADVANCED FEATURES - $36,250
---
The rebrand (3 weeks of work) will be completed at no additional cost to Nouns DAO.

I loved the quality of these glasses at Nouns Town. Noggles are one of our primary memes and funding prescription glasses for children is a high quality, aligned, and Nounish story to tell. For the price I wish this funded more glasses, but I appreciate the amount of marketing commitments in the proposal.
If this doesn't pass I encourage some kind stranger to delegate a few votes to metagov.nounsamigos.eth. Mono and Lex are wonderful community builders and are in a unique position to bring new active voices and votes to Nouns governance. Momentum is a precious thing.

# Nouns.Biz Dashboards
We are approaching the finish line on this proposal!
1. **Nouns DAO Rest API**
Our Rest API is live at [api.nouns.biz](https://api.nouns.biz "Nouns DAO Rest API - proposal, auction, and financial data for developers") . We have all proposal and auction data available, as well as calculated stats like treasury value, book value, and asset outflow / inflows. The data is free and available to all Nounish builders. The API is still in development and endpoints may change - contact us for dev support and change notifications!
2. **Nouns.Biz Stats and Graphs Pages**
Using the Rest API we built [Nouns.Biz Stats](https://nouns.biz/stats/) and [Nouns.Biz Graphs](https://nouns.biz/graphs/). These are collections of live data and visualizations, intended to be dense references for community members. The data is live and automatically updated. The current design is temporary.
3. **Nouns.Biz Dashboards**
The final step! We have the data and are currently building clean, elegant Treasury and Fork dashboards. These will include more curated data sets, a simple and fast way to understand the DAO. This is also the beginning of an entire [Nouns.biz](https://nouns.biz/ "Nouns DAO and Nounish Community") redesign.
4. **Nouns DAO Contract Upgrades**
We upgraded our Nerman.js SDK to support all of the new contracts launched in the client incentive upgrades of [Prop 532](https://nouns.wtf/vote/532). This wasn't in our proposal scope but was necessary work to keep all of our bots and services running.
CC0 building blocks. We've seen the 3D character models used frequently, I hope these ones find equal success. The Unity store is a great destination for them and I would also like to see the models in TurboSquid and other 3D marketplaces.
The more I think about this the more I agree with what wiz has said in other forums. With the structure of these incentives the most popular clients will be the ones that send rewards back to the user performing the actions. The only tool we have to fight this is client id permissioning. Do we ban clients that return funds to users?
Assuming clients return rewards to the users:
Auction rewards act as a rebate on Nouns won at auction. Not a big deal.
Voting rewards incentivize users to vote on every eligible proposal. I'm ok with this. More vote volume. Not necessarily an increase in thoughtful votes, but still more eyeballs paying attention to Nouns. Perhaps there is also an incentive to discourage others from voting, to increase a users proportional share of votes.
Proposal rewards I'm less certain about. It incentivizes users to submit more proposals that reach a minimum # of FOR votes, currently 10% or 57 Nouns. Perhaps we see an increase in simple proposals like config changes, large proposals split into multiple smaller ones. This could also incentivize users to put more proposals onchain on behalf of others and keep the rewards. However, individuals and coordinated groups are already able to meet the 10% threshold specified. We could see voting blocks pass each others minor but legit proposals to drain the rewards. Worst case we see absolute spam from a voting block that controls the minimum amount of FOR votes. The other challenge here is that a growing proposal volume increases the risk that a malicious proposal will go unnoticed, as well, Nouns will be covering the bill to refund gas costs on all of the extra proposal voting happening.
In the future I would like to fund third party analysis of protocol changes like this.

Nouncil has decided in favor of Prop 549: Nouns University, with 18 votes for and 12 against, reflecting a somewhat split decision. Supporters are enthusiastic about the potential to offer scholarships, education, and opportunities for students to build Nounish projects, viewing it as a valuable way to spread Nouns' mission and values through academia. Opponents, however, expressed concerns about the lack of formal agreements with universities, which they felt added unnecessary risk. Despite these reservations, the majority believe that the initiative has significant potential to foster innovation and engagement among students.

**imwylin** | *"the only reason i’m voting against is because there is no MOU in place with the universities. if the universities were already onboard, this would be a definitive yes from me. it’s a totally different experiment and the planned activities + scholarships are awesome. the uncertainty of not having the universities onboard makes it too high-risk. even if they aren’t formal MOUs as legal documents, getting at least written confirmation from university administrators that they are interested would change my vote to a yes"*
**benbodhi** | *"I really want to vote yes for this, but I think it needs some adjustments. I'd love to see an online video series (even if that was filmed with the students here). I'd love to see a scalable and self sustainable model of this. And tend to agree with the naming of nouns university feeling a bit off right now."*
**ABSTAINS - 1 VOTES**
As I understand this proposal, subdomains will be automatically created for all Noun tokens, and only verified holders will be able to utilize them. This gives an official ENS, like 69.nouns.eth, as opposed to a self-managed ENS like Noun69.eth.
I like that the DAO can provide an official extension of identity into ENS. This also opens up some interesting doors. For instance, say we create a Noun 69 art NFT collection and point the royalties towards 69.nouns.eth. Now you can add non-fungible value to the Noun in a way that follows the Noun when it's traded. Also if you want to airdrop something to Noun 69 the correct address is simple to find.
One big request - when a token transfer occurs the ENS needs to point to the updated holder fast, and the previous holders permissions should be revoked. For this to be useful the identity must mirror the Noun token ownership. We have to trust it's accuracy.
Another question. Who should get the identity, the holder, or the delegate? I'm personally leaning towards identity following delegation but unsure.
On the whole I think Nouns has really let the "digital identity" conversation fall by the wayside. It's still a fundamental part of what we're trying to do and I think we should lean into projects trying to make it work. If we look through recent proposals nobody is using their Noun as a primary identity, it's all personal ENS. This is somewhat of a failure.
I'm not sure if people will use this, but I support it because I still want to put energy into the idea that Nouns can be used as a primary identity. If this inspires even a few people to use their Noun identity I think it's worth it.
Experiments with incentivizing governance are interesting too. I don't think these are long term incentives I want baked into the protocol, but I'm down for the short experiments.

Governance with fractionalized Nouns is a core feature we've needed since day 1. I think this is a reasonable take with reasonable costs. I also think we should encourage the development of multiple tokens, just as we want to incentivize multiple clients. Competition is good for the DAO.
I expect this to undergo both technical and game theory / tokenomic audits as well.
I support this audit but in my opinion we should also fund a separate game theory / tokenomics audit on this. I have not seen sufficient discussion about how this will affect auction and arbitrage behavior.

With a decentralized voter body it's important for proposals to provide context and justifications that don't rely on a priori knowledge. I welcome more parameter config proposals but there must be at least an attempt to justify the change.
Mono and Lex have been authentically connecting Nouns to an ETH-centric builder audience for a long time now. As a DAO running on Ethereum these are some of the most important events for Nouns to be present at. The activations feel very aligned with the vibe I want Nouns to be presenting to the world. I strongly support this project and wish the team best of luck representing Nouns in 2024.

We're 500 props in and I keep thinking to myself, what is going to last? What can we fund that will survive years, decades. How do proposals add to an infinite art project in any way that approaches infinity other than strictly funding onchain dev + art projects? I would like more proposals to have a longer term vision. Everyone should be striving to build something bigger, longer lasting, something that can chug alongside and power the never-ending Nounish machine.
A key path forward is going to be funding less projects and more infrastructure. Fund the foundation, and tie it to Nouns in an authentic way. In this light funding buildings makes a lot of sense. A building isn't infinite, but could easily last long enough to have future impact we can only begin to imagine.
So, ideologically, I'm in. Now the question is what exactly can this specific group deliver, and if the activity in building will be sufficiently Nounish.
If you haven't, watch the pitch video: https://vimeo.com/920644132/183f735ef6
This group has been pushing The HOPE Outdoor Gallery forward for a while now. It's clearly a dream project, and their ambitions are inline with Nouns. Public Goods + Art. I see plans for charity fundraisers, public art installations, summer camps for creative career development. Less of an event space and more of a not-for-profit local hub, which is exactly where I would want to position Nouns. They are working with high caliber artists (Shepard Fairey!) and plan to incorporate Noggles into their main sign and include us in their Grand Opening. We will be part of the story.
I appreciate that they've raised funds and the project is in motion already. We don't have enough ETH to fund larger infrastructure on our own and I think we should get comfortable with strategic partnerships. For this place to succeed they need to be throwing a lot of events. I want to see Nouns events, but I also want to see unrelated events that feel Nounish in spirit, bringing in other groups and partners that we would proudly associate with.
There's actually a risk involved with putting the noggles there. What if the quality dips. What if they host low effort, low attendance events. What if the actual building isn't done well. Poor performance could hurt our brand in a serious way. Google 'apefest laser eyes'.
The team in the proposal is competent. I believe they can deliver. Truthfully though, it's Brennen's involvement that makes me want to chime in with this vote. He has been present in Nouns for years, building, investing, participating in the community. Always giving more than he takes. (Has he taken anything?). He brings the full Nounish wisdom to Austin, an in depth understanding of our values, our commitment to quality. I trust his enthusiasm for this project and team. If he is going to be present, working with the events team, I have full faith that the spirit of Nouns will be reflected in this building for years to come.
# Nerman: Nouns Dashboards
## **TLDR**
---
We're asking for:
a. ) 16 ETH to fund development and maintenance of:
- Two Nouns DAO dashboards (a treasury dashboard and a fork dashboard)
- A REST API to provide data for the dashboards, also publicly accessible. Similar to [nouns.id](https://nouns.id "Nouns DAO token rest API for developers")
b.) 1 Noun and 4 ETH to retrofund 4 months of work on Nerman
___
## RECAP
---
Last December we submitted [Prop 470 - Nerman Returns](https://www.nouns.camp/proposals/470) (also see [Joel's VWR](https://www.mmmogu.com/tx/0x329a13bc4aa07e8e0ce1c348f5dad3be3092b590dc066f3262604a6533eecfa2)). A majority of DAO voters supported the proposal but we landed 1 vote short of the required threshold.
For the past 4 months we have continued self-funded work on the project, releasing several new features including support for Farcaster, Prop House, and Snapshot feeds. All of the feeds / sdk work is described on our [update log](https://nerman.biz/update-log). We have also been adding Nerman governance to more Discords, facilitating community participation in Nouns DAO from groups like Nouncil, Lil Nouncil, Nouns Amigos, and Nouns Esports. With more than 100 people participating in Nouns DAO through Nerman there are more active voters using Nerman governance than voting onchain in the DAO. Nerman processed votes regularly account for 30-40% of total Nouns voting in the DAO.
___
## DASHBOARDS
---
We want to provide insight and utility for the Nounish community while also providing open source tooling that is useful and impressive to the outside world. After much reflection, and conversation with the community, we have decided that analytical dashboards are a high priority for Nouns DAO right now and we would love to build them with Nerman.
Using our SDK ([Nerman.js](https://nerman.biz/js-sdk 'Nerman.js Nouns SDK')) we have a mountain of [Nouns DAO](https://nouns.biz "Nouns DAO and Nounish Community") data indexed and available for use. We can provide accurate live data as well as historical summaries all the way back to Gnome 0. There are many useful values we can produce from this, as well as compelling graphs and visuals to help Nouners follow and understand DAO activity. We want to inform DAO decisionmakers, providing information and context useful to people voting, bidding, proposing, and participating in any other way. To start, we have plans for two dashboards: a comprehensive overview of DAO financials / treasury, and an overview of fork data.
The Key Values and Key Graphs described below are merely starting points. We intend to include the most essential data, no more, no less. In the process we will experiment with options and consult with Nouners to deliver the best dashboard possible.
___
## TREASURY DASHBOARD
___
Our first dashboard will provide a summary of Nouns DAO finances by exploring DAO assets, in-flows, and out-flows. To do this we will combine data indexed from multiple DAO contracts, including the main treasury, payer, streamer, and legacy contracts such as treasury v1. The dashboard will include live values accurate to the latest ETH block as well as historical summaries of past data and projections for the future.
**Key Graphs**
- Treasury balance over time (see this [**design reference**](https://treasury.meritcircle.io/)). A interactive stacked bar graph with a monthly breakdown of the DAOs assets and combined treasury value.
- Total asset value vs Nouns book value over time
- Outflows vs inflows over time, including future projections
**Key Data - Assets**
- Assets held - ETH, USDC, WETH, stETH, Nouns, Lil Nouns, etc. across all treasury and dao contracts
- Total Value of Assets (measured in ETH and USD)
- Current Noun Book Value (with and without treasury Nouns included)
**Key Data - In-Flows / Out-Flows**
- Total DAO out-flow summary (proposal spends, forks)
- Total DAO in-flow summary (ETH received in auctions, ETH transferred to treasury)
- DAO funds spending breakdowns by category, month, project, and wallet address / groups
- DAO auction proceed breakdowns by month, noun traits, and wallet address / groups
- Current month summary of all above data, as well as historical data + future projections
- Summary of live streaming contract payments
- Manually annotated proposals that are likely to recur to estimate future commitment
___
## FORK DASHBOARD
___
This dashboard provides an analysis of data surrounding Nouns DAO fork functionality. It will explore the likelihood of and impact of future forks, as well as a summary of data from previous forks. This information will specifically be useful to people crafting / voting on proposals, bidding on Nouns, and buyers / sellers on secondary. This will provide an accurate value of how much DAO assets are on the table to arbitrage and what actions can affect that. We will include a basic summary of previous forks (ie treasury value and Nouns exited) but our intention is mostly to focus on Nouns DAO and future forks. We will also experiment with fork indicators, trying to find reliable measurements that indicate the likelihood of an upcoming fork.
**Key Graphs**
- Treasury value vs NAV - focused on activity after the last fork with a summary of potential asset arbitrage data and a forks impact on the treasury
- Visualization that tries to express the likelihood and timing of upcoming forks. This will combine a summary of Nouns auctioned since last fork, potential RFV for each one, paired with the current fork threshold and any useful indicators whether wallets are likely to fork or not
**Key Data**
- Nouns auction prices and book value over time.
- number of new Noun purchases associated with previously forking wallets
- addresses that have held Nouns through previous forks and are less likely to fork
- number of Nouns auctioned since last fork
- estimated total RFV on the table since last fork
- effects of dispersing treasury Nouns and budget spends on fork calculations, threshold, etc
- financial summary of previous forks (Nouns + assets forked, changes to treasury, net value gained / lost from all forkers)
- current state of previous forks (very brief) - treasury value, Nouns exited, Nouns remaining, etc
___
## OUR TECH - DATA
___
We are building a Nouns REST API that will provide all of the data needed for the dashboards. You can view a simple example at https://nouns.id. This new one will be hosted at api.nouns.biz. Eventually this will be comprehensive and feature all Nouns data, but for now we will prioritize adding the exact data we need to make our dashboards. That data will be publicly accessible and anyone can use it in the future with a simple http call.
Our REST API will be built with our indexer in the [Nerman.js SDK](https://nerman.biz/js-sdk/ 'Nerman.js Nouns SDK'). This allows us to keep the REST API data live to the latest ETH block automatically. We will prioritize data and calculations that can be automated with the SDK to ensure our dashboards stay up to date with no manual work required.
Developers are more than welcome to build with our REST API data, and if they want more control over the data they can use our SDK and index their own version of the data locally.
___
## OUR TECH - WEB DESIGN
___
Our team runs a web design company primarily focused on portfolio sites for creators in the film industry. You can view our examples of our previous work at [**ANOA.ca**](https://anoa.ca "ANOA: Creative Portfolio Websites for the Film Industry").
These dashboards will be elegant, simple, clearly Nouns branded, and part of a larger website focused on [Nouns DAO and Nounish Community](https://nouns.biz "The Business of Nouns DAO and Nounish Community"). Our goal is to be the public facing canon source of DAO analytics and metadata. Anyone interested in Nouns will find these compelling, and we also want to provide information that Nouns power users want to see regularly, easy to skim on both mobile and desktop.
We will design beautiful graphs with minimal, well-selected, and cleanly presented information. The treasury balance / asset breakdown on Merit Circle is a good reference: [https://treasury.meritcircle.io/](https://treasury.meritcircle.io/ "https://treasury.meritcircle.io/"). A pleasure to read and easy to skim. We want to create beautiful dashboards that other DAOs are jealous of.
___
## UPDATES & MAINTENANCE
___
Our tech stack is pretty simple. Our REST API can run on free static website hosting. Calls to index and update the data can be automated, and the indexer can run within [Alchemy's](https://www.alchemy.com/) free tier. Our database has minimal costs.
The main work needed to keep these dashboards live and up-to-date is to implement any changes when the DAO switches contracts. This isn't complicated work. If we add manual annotations (ie proposal categorization) we will also need a few hours each month spent on that.
We aim to build a website that is reliable and hardy. Even without contract updates, or manual annotations, the website will continue to function and be useful well into the future.
---
## BUDGET
---
**Development Team Costs - 16 ETH**
- 2 months of work on dashboards from the [Lobal Global](https://lobal.global "a laborious madness") dev team led by [Joel Cares](https://joelcares.net/).
- 5 ETH / mo * 1.5 full time devs * 2 months = 15 ETH
- 1 ETH covers updates and maintenance until the end of 2024

--- to begin: ---
An explanation of why our indexing approach is compelling.
https://nouns.id is a static website built using Nerman.js indexed data. It is hosted entirely for free using Netlify and Alchemy. Once every 24 hours Netlify automatically runs the indexer and rebuilds the project to update the data. Scroll to the bottom of the home page, check out the stats, and look at a sample page: https://nouns.id/500. The pages load instantly, and that data is just the beginning of what we can calculate. We talk directly to an Ethereum node and don't depend on any other hosted service, like subgraph. Trust minimized front-end dev. I maintain that this is an interesting and vital approach to exploring Nouns data.
--- and, a response ---
Nouns is still centralized. Until the veto is removed we are a DAO on a leash, permissioned and fragile.
If we ever want to remove the veto we need to develop a few things: a decentralized voter base resistant to 51% attacks / voter fatigue, a decentralized community resistant to social takeover / propaganda from hostile actors, and a decentralized technical infrastructure to maximize permissionless collaboration and competition.
I want to get rid of the veto. All of my work is aiming towards that, and maybe it's time to be explicit. Nouns is far less interesting to me if the veto is retained.
Building a decentralized voter base and a community resistant to takeover was my main intention with Nouncil. It worked. Nouncil has been operating for years, regularly has more active individuals voting than the DAO itself, and is the second most active voting participant in the DAO. Proof of that here: https://nounsagora.com/voters?orderBy=mostVotesCast - Kudos to Noun 12, champion of the votes.
Nerman Gov has processed more than 20,000 unique votes in Nouns and helped Nouncil maintain its independence and defy capture pre-fork era. It's also the only voter body truely accountable to public opinion and regularly pivots and makes changes based on feedback. Nouncil has been running mostly without me, and without further funding, for the last 6 months. Check out our user participation rates at http://api.nouncil.wtf/. They're high. These are very engaged voters. They still meet every single week to discuss Nouns DAO proposals.
The rest of Nerman, the SDK and developer experience that we've pivoted to focus on, is all done looking at the decentralization of Nouns technical infrastructure and looking towards building a healthy, competitive dev ecosystem around Nouns.
The Nouns Foundation was set up as stewards of the centralized DAO / Nounder resources. Closing the official Discord was a first step towards decentralization, and the current plan is to sunset nouns.wtf in the next year. The @NounsDAO twitter account has been changed to "Official Twitter of the Nouns Foundation." We are well on our way.
There is one giant behemoth remaining. The monorepo. The central repository of official Nouns DAO code. If any centralization is lurking its right there. Our Nerman Discord bot has replaced NounsBot in most servers, and with the Nerman.js SDK our intention is to offer alternatives to the nouns-assets, nouns-sdk, and nouns-subgraph packages. Our documentation will become an alternative canon source for contract source code, ABIs, and a general understanding of the DAO.
Migrating off of centralized resources is only the first step. Step #2 is building healthy thriving communities of builders with competitive incentives to create a decentralized cornucopia of resources. We want to keep people engaged while naturally limiting governance capture. If the DAO were static everyone could host nouns.wtf and subgraph clones and we're golden. But Nouns DAO is changing, and with the verbs current proposal it's not slowing down. We need active dev teams, and they need to be paying attention to keep up with the DAO or things will break. This is expensive and funding many teams is cost prohibitive.
This is why with Nerman.js we started building an SDK first, and not a front end, with the goal of creating a healthy, competitive dev environment that reduces the costs of supporting multiple teams working on Nouns clients. We are thinking long term. If nouns.camp and agora are the only functioning gov clients keeping up with DAO changes, we have failed. Nerman.js will give developers a headstart and allow builders to focus on solving new problems and improving user experience rather than recreating indexers and data processing functions with duplicated functionality. It's not cost effective to keep working this way. A by product of what we want to do is also onboarding a large amount of devs into Nouns and strengthening the health of our social structure as a whole.
If you didn't read through our final propdate please do: https://www.updates.wtf/update/337-3
I'm surprised at the comments about not seeing changes or new features from Nerman. We were very active in the DAO, releasing new features consistently and frantically during the fork and with v3. This was a primary way for people to pay attention to the fork events, propdates, zero-weight votes, candidate proposals, nouns nymz, and I'm very proud of the fast, public work we did here.
Currently the SDK is primarily used in our own MVPs to showcase functionality - Nerman Discord, Noun O'Clock bot, and https://nouns.id. Our Discord bot is in all main Nouns discords, including Agora, who built their own bot but migrated to Nerman Discord so they could focus on their core business model. NounsNymz and SharkDAO used the SDK in projects to handle events, and to be clear these are talented developers fully capable of accessing the contracts directly. The SDK just saved them time.
We just released the indexer. It's brand new and no one has had a chance to use it yet. We haven't yet received any budget for incentives or creative marketing. This current proposal is precisely when we want to start pushing for traction and building community. Its going to take some work but our marketing ask is reasonable, and will be spent encouraging devs to build with Nouns.
Our SDK will save teams serious time and help Nouns DAO keep project costs competitive. We want to build developer kits - we can provide the exact data and functions needed to launch a new governance client. Just build the UI. We want to start funding competitions to incentivize development, and we also want to continue building our own things - dashboards, gov clients and clients to interact with parts of the DAO not implemented anywhere yet (submit a head! add a new palette! burn a noun!). We've also yet to see an auction client that takes much attention from nouns.wtf. And the video we want to produce would target developers and bring them into our universe.
Our guiding light is developer community and getting more developers building in Nouns. Quite simply, we had to build these tools before we could start encouraging people to use them. We are ready for a flurry of work now. We want more devs, more projects, and more competition driving an ever increasing level of proposal quality.
A developer friendly tool kit won't happen accidentally as a by-product of making a client. We certainly can pivot to developing our own front end clients, building more dashboards, and onboarding developers in a more public way rather than focusing on supporting write functions next. This would prove the utility of what we've built already, but slow down feature completion for the SDK. It is a valid path if that's what the community wants, but we would always be developing with the SDK and developer community in mind.
On a final note - I've requested ETH because I like the meme of working for a DAO and getting paid in ETH. It's that simple, and it comes up in conversation anytime I speak about Nouns DAO IRL. I like ETH, I like memes. It's why I'm here.
# Nerman Returns
## **TLDR**
---
146.5 ETH to fund 6 months of development of **[Nerman.js - Nouns SDK](https://github.com/JoeCars/Nerman.js)**, general Nouns developer resources and dashboards, the Nounish event feed discord bot, creative marketing, and developer community building. We've also asked for 1 Noun to retrofund work completed in Nov + Dec.

## RECAP
---
[**Read our Work Summary / Final Propdate**](https://updates.wtf/update/337-3)
We have been busy! The last few months have been a wild ride in Nouns DAO. From DAO v3 forks and candidate proposals to governance pool auctions, Nymz anon-posting, and Propdates, the DAO has had significant changes to its operations and social structures. Our Nerman SDK and Discord bot have made these changes much easier to follow, helping Nerman tell the story of Nouns to the community. We have also completed our Nouns data indexer and released the https://nouns.id API to showcase what we can do. This is just the beginning.

## WHATS NEXT
---
### Nouns DAO - Keeping Up
This DAO moves at a frantic pace. One of Nerman's primary goals is to stay on top of DAO changes, supporting new features as fast as we can. In the last term we quickly implemented DAO v3 events, giving Nouners a simple feed to follow the story of forks, candidate proposals, fork dao activity, etc.
The Verbs team outlined more DAO changes in [Prop 458](https://nouns.wtf/vote/458). If Nouns Governor or any other contracts launch during this period we will promptly support the contracts in Nerman.js, get their events into our Nounish feeds, work the new features into documentation for devs and the general public, support all write functions needed to interact with the contracts, and post about the new functionality to social media.
We will also continue to improve general utility for all current Nouns DAO contracts. High priority on the list is some helper functions to summarize and make sense of DAO proposal transactions. These helper functions are something all front-end clients can use.
### Nouns DAO - Write Functions
[Nerman.js SDK](https://github.com/JoeCars/nerman.js) currently listens to Nouns DAO contract events and reads data from Nouns DAO contracts. We're missing one big thing: Write Functions! Submitting proposals, bidding, casting votes, adding traits... people interact with the DAO through write functions, and we want to provide devs with standardized tools to use them. This will be useful to people building bots, programming front-end gov clients, and anyone trying to write code to interact with the DAO.
- support all Nouns contract write functions
- document how to call functions with example data
- code helper functions to format arguments, ie formatting proposal content and transaction data, trait submissions, etc.
- code helper functions to sanitize and check user input for errors
- experiment with additional functionality such as Wilson Cusack's voteWithAttribution idea, using the datasuffix to attribute each vote cast to a front-end client
- provide standard solutions to more complicated or time-sensitive interactions, such as auction bids on Nouns websites. We can document how to show when a transaction is placed in the mempool, and when it is finalized, so developers know exactly what functionality to implement for live engagement.
### Prop House Protocol - Events
The [Prop House Protocol](https://prop.house/) is live! Congratulations to the Prop House team bringing it all on-chain. Now Nerman has some work to do. Using their SDK we want to add all Prop House events to Nerman.js and get those notifications into the hands of the Nouns community, supporting events like new house, new round, vote cast, winners announced, etc.
We will work with Discord communities to add these notifications, feeds, and forums as appropriate, helping people follow and participate in Prop House. A high priority of ours will be to support the Nouns token house and make it as entertaining and celebrated as possible.
### Snapshot - Events
We will create Snapshot support in Nerman.js that lets a user specify a community on Snapshot and listen to its events, such as new Proposals and votes, and to get results when the vote is complete. [SharkDAO](https://snapshot.org/#/sharkdao.eth) is already using our SDK to receive Nouns events, and we would also like to support creating proposals to help daos automate voting in Nouns DAO. This will also serve as a general utility Snapshot notification tool, and anyone using Snapshot outside of Nouns will be able to make use of this too.
### Nounish Feeds Discord Bot
Continued quality of life improvements on our Nounish Feeds discord bot as well as new feature addition.
- Proposal Forums - add proposal status tags so we can easily sort props by status or do things like only view active proposals
- Support for Reddit to post all [/r/nounsdao](https://reddit.com/r/nounsdao) content in Discord
- Support for Farcaster to get [Nouns Channel](https://warpcast.com/~/channel/nouns) posts into Discord
### Documentation
One major goal this term is to fully document all of Nouns DAO write functions, including a guide to formatting the arguments for people calling the functions. We will add Etherscan links to all contract pages, as well as link to any [Nouns Front-End Governance Clients](https://nouns.biz/governance/ "Nouns Governance Front-End Clients") that support those functions. Our [nouns.biz](https://nouns.biz "Nouns DAO and Nounish Community") documentation is essentially a decentralized entry point to working with and using the Nouns protocol. We will continue to work on the [Nouns contracts](https://nouns.biz/nouns-dao-contracts) section, and create separate pages for each contract with a canon summary of contract history and ABIs.
Meanwhile we will maintain consistent documentation for the code within Nerman.js and our Discord bot. We will create a [Nouns developer portal](https://nouns.biz/dev "Build and develop with Nouns!"), a landing page for all devs. One main focus of ours this term is going to be supporting web-developers specifically. We would like to demonstrate common Nouns DAO queries, reading from contracts directly or using our indexed data. For instance, calculating dynamic quorum live with the adjusted supply and getting all info for a given address (Nouns held, delegated to, vote statistics, etc). This will make building front ends much easier, giving devs instant solutions to common problems and letting them focus solely on the experience and innovation.
### Marketing & Media
Now that more of the Nerman toolkit is functional we want to start building a developer community and incentivizing people to build with Nouns. This term we aim to regularly post general interest dev content and threads to twitter, farcaster, and reddit. We will also explore the dao contracts and feature other developers working in Nouns.
We want to bring Nerman to life and create a short video with the character. This will feature Nouns, Nounish things, Nerman, etc. It will be a fun comedic Nounish short featuring Nerman, a bit of story, and a lil developer haha here and there. [Joel Cares](https://joelcares.net) will write and direct it.
Finally - we will run some competitions through [Prop House](https://prop.house) and [Uplink.wtf](https://uplink.wtf/) to bring together the developer community and have some fun with Nerman and Nouns!

## WHATS NEXT - STRETCH GOALS
---
Our intention is to be malleable and adaptive, always working on the tasks that benefit Nouns DAO the most. New projects may arise that take our full attention to support. However, if we find ourselves with extra time, we will complete tasks outlined below.
### Nerman.js - Media Wrangling
We want to make it simple for anyone to access, render, modify, and submit Nouns art on-chain. We also want to develop off-chain utilities to assist with utilizing the media. We will put extra effort into supporting the Descriptor and Seeder contracts and developing simple tools to:
- develop transactions to add traits
- develop processes to work with palettes while building traits
- check that art is compatible with current palettes on Nouns DAO
- submit additional palettes
- Convert on-chain art into a variety of file formats of various sizes
- Render art off-chain from seeds
- provide best practices for cacheing on-chain images and art for use in websites
We also want to build features for media used in other Nouns contracts and websites:
- Fetch, compress, and cache images and videos from proposals and propdates for more consistent images that won't expire or disappear without warning.
- When caching ENS addresses we can also standardize how to get a profile picture for an address and cache it.
### Nounish Projects
There are many people building projects in the decentralized Nouniverse. [Propdates](https://www.propdates.wtf/) , [Federation](https://www.federation.wtf/), and [Nouns Nymz](https://nouns.nymz.xyz/) are all examples of of significant creations that changed the social dynamics of Nouns. We want to keep up with changes in these projects (we're already implemented the new Propdates v2 contract!) and be ready for any new projects like these that arise. When new projects start to gain traction we will endeavour to support at least an MVP of them as soon as we can.
We will also try to keep up with documentation for these projects, maintaining a canon source for contract history, source code, and ABIs.
### Nounish DAO Documentation
- documenting the contract addresses and ABIs of various Nouns related DAOs to build a map and guide to on-chain Nounish activity
- Add contract addresses and ABIs to code and to documentation as canonical source of information. If someone wants to know where the Lil Nouns contract is they can ask Nerman.
- public documentation for other contracts we've fully implemented, for instance Lil Nouns, Propdates, etc, and support for any further projects we support
- summary of Nounish DAOs across all chains, sorted by treasury size
---
