I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
I am abstaining from this vote due to a conflict of interest, as Bright Moments was a cosponsor of the event. I attended the event as a guest and was impressed with the quality of the exhibition as well as the turnout. Kugusha.eth is a true community builder.
I believe that taking a big bet on Farcon is a high leverage activity for the DAO. As a decentralized organization, it is hard for Purple to organize events and initiatives that require a high-degree of central planning. Farcon '24 is shaping up to be influential in the development of the Farcaster ecosystem and this is Purple's opportunity to drive awareness of the DAO and our mission within a broader conversation. In addition, the way the Farcon team handled the feedback on the initial version of this proposal was impressive and professional. Although the original prop likely would have passed without revision, Graham and Ted took the time to address feedback and gain consensus before resubmitting. I am looking forward to Purple contributing both financially and culturally to the success of this event.
I appreciate the time and energy that went into this proposal. However, I am voting **AGAINST** at this time. Put simply: I don't think we need it. I take a long-term view of Purple. We are well positioned to become an extremely influential organization within the Farcaster ecosystem. If the protocol is successful, Purple will be responsible for distributing hundreds of millions of dollars to a globally distributed community of developers. Our main benefit as an organization is clear incentive alignment and a transparent onchain structure. This has allowed us to attract a significant portion of Farcaster's early users and self-fund a treasury for redistribution within the ecosystem. We should be *very* wary of anything that adds complexity, especially if its an elective decision and not required to continue executing on our mission. This proposal will introduce costs, ongoing administrative duties, and implicit centralizing effects on the DAO through the creation of a separate and distinct entity from the onchain treasury. As one of the first fully onchain organizations, we need to run the idea maze without the help of successful precedents. Rather than rushing into a hard-to-reverse decision, I believe it is in our best interests to wait for additional clarity from the United States instead of settling for a nebulous corporate entity in the Marshall Islands.
qDAU is the focus for the protocol. There is still growth left within the existing crypto-native community, & this proposal has a good shot at convincing new users to sign up for the protocol at DevConnect.
Channels are working well to encourage high-quality conversation on the Network. Let's double down and give incentive to builders who are helping to expand the functionality through software.
Channel Focused Retroactive Funding Round&&## tl;dr For the next 6 weeks, the Warpcast team is focused on increasing quality casts and engagement. The most promising approach is through channels. Purple should help incentivize growth during this period by offering a retroactive funding round to 3 projects that make channels better / easier to use. ## Round Details - Prop house submission deadline: November 10th, 2023 - Total funding amount: 1 ETH x 3 winners = 3 ETH - Criteria: Improved cast quality and/or engagement in channels **Potential projects:** - Channel specific clients - Browser extensions that cast directly to channels - Link aggregators + redirecting into channels - FIP-2 related projects ## Related casts: - How you can help: https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0xfa79b5 - Experiment announcement: https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0x161754 Thanks to [Tayyab](https://warpcast.com/tayyab/0x50e3e02a) for providing constructive feedback on the payout amounts for this proposal.
I believe that directly funding developers is the best thing we can do to encourage the growth of the protocol. Prop Houses with a fixed number of winners are a binary outcome: you either win or you don't. This is a nice way to reward marginal submissions and encourage them to keep working on projects that might be too early to receive a top score during the voting period.
Channel Focused Retroactive Funding Round&&## tl;dr For the next 6 weeks, [the Warpcast team is focused on increasing quality casts and engagement.](https://imgur.com/a/7Yz38mn) The most promising approach is through channels. Purple should help incentize growth during this period by offering a retroactive funding round to 5 projects that make channels better / easier to use. ## Round Details - Prop house submission deadline: November 10th, 2023 - Total funding amount: 1 ETH x 5 winners = 5 ETH - Criteria: Improved cast quality and/or engagement in channels **Potential projects:** - Channel specific clients - Browser extensions that cast directly to channels - Link aggregators + redirecting into channels - FIP-2 related projects ## Related casts: - How you can help: https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0xfa79b5 - Experiment announcement: https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0x161754
I can't help but feel like this is a web2 approach. Do we really need to spend 5 ETH on a memo? We know what we need to do: fund great builders. If we're not doing that, let's spend $ doing it, not talking about doing it or coming up with focus groups. Individuals create proposals - not committees.
Merkle currently owns 26 PRPL tokens, which is ~8% of the DAO. They will remain an important steward of voting power in the Purple ecosystem for a long time, even if no additional tokens are minted to their wallet.
I am in favor of upgrading the token artwork for Purple. 0xen is a Purple holder and long-time Farcaster user who deeply understands our culture and purpose. Aligning the artist payment with Purple's 12-month token revenue aligns incentives and sets a natural checkpoint for us to revisit how this proposal performed against its stated goals.
I have mixed feelings about rewarding discretionary retroactive grants outside of our scheduled funding rounds. More capital to builders is good, but we want to drive as much attention as possible to the funding rounds, and it seems odd that we didn't consider Neynar when evaluating the previous round that ended recently.
This feels like a reasonable ask, ethCC is a big conference, and matching grants from other organizations all make this an easy yes. Let's try to attract some new builders and align it with a future Prop House round or Hackathon to capture the momentum from the event.
I am voting FOR this proposal to establish predictable retroactive funding rounds. We have already successfully conducted one retroactive funding round (PRPL-4), proving the viability of the idea. It's time to scale it.
Return Bot Developer Funding To Treasury&&tl;dr: Our Bot Developer Prop House round didn't reach submission quorum, so I am proposing we return the funds to the treasury Longer version: [Proposal 26 (Bot Developer Prop House)](https://nouns.build/dao/0xa45662638e9f3bbb7a6fecb4b17853b7ba0f3a60/vote/0x0478ba533db33e15586134db8d8e450e98e50f9aa409cdf907208abd63f81cff) passed with 21 FOR votes and 0 AGAINST votes. This result was based on momentum from a [high engagement cast](https://warpcast.com/phil/0xee1bf8) where I suggested (based on Andrei's observation) that we should take advantage of the momentum from Twitter's new ToS to attract bot developers to Farcaster. Ultimately, the Prop had more community support than developer support, only garnering 3 submissions. This raises questions about what to do next: - Should we distribute 1 ETH to all three developers? - Should we distribute the complete 5 ETH between the three developers? - What do the votes even mean if all of them are guaranteed to win. The voting is intended to be an implicit filter mechanism, and it assumes there are more applicants than winners. Rather than award ETH to all of the developers who applied, I think we should take this as a sign of a lack of traction for the idea and return the $ to the treasury. In the future, we should consider alternate funding mechanisms to encourage developer to move to Farcaster, including [a smaller bounty program for members](https://warpcast.com/phil/0x3943b8). If passed, this Proposal will execute a self-txn, sending 0.01 ETH from the treasury to the treasury. More importantly, it will indicate to signers of the Small Grants multisig that they should return the 5 ETH rather than making a judgement call about how to split up the funds for the 3 developers who applied. To the developers who applied: thank you for taking the time. This is not an indictment of your proposal or the quality of your work, and I encourage you to submit for a future retroactive funding round if you do decide to continue the migration.
I am voting NO on this proposal to fund BLVCKHAND with 5 ETH. Here is what I would need to see changed to vote YES: - Reduce scope to one deliverable. Bundling a greenfield mobile app development AND a merch kit into a single proposal feels strange. The skillset required to deliver on these goals is very different, and I'm not convinced 5 ETH is enough. - Clarity on payout conditions. Does the team receive the 5 ETH upfront? Only once all success criteria have been achieved? What if they completed one section, but not both? - Credentials that the team can deliver a mobile app. I'm not sure who is in the BLVCKHAND working group, but delivering a mobile app w/ 100 members in a month is a tall order. - A ragequit option, similar to our engineer-in-residence setup with Juicebox & Alex.
The matching grant from Warpcast is what put this over the line from me. 1 ETH doesn't feel like enough to properly fund a conference, but having additional funds contributed outside of the Purple treasury helps signal legitimacy that will make it easier to find sponsors.
Bot Developer Prop House&&**tl;dr:** A Prop House round with five 1 ETH prizes to encourage popular Twitter bot developers to port their infrastructure to Farcaster **Background** On April 29th, Twitter is deprecating their Search and Account Activity API. This will affect hobby and commercial developers who rely on the API to read content from Twitter’s database. Farcaster Hubs are now launched, which enable broad access to data from the Farcaster protocol. Purple should support developers in their migration efforts and use this opportunity to educate developers about the benefits of an open and decentralized social media protocol. **Timeline** - 2 weeks for submissions (starting from May ~5 or whenever the Prop House is ready, whichever is sooner) - 1 week for voting (starting from May ~19 or whenever submissions end, whichever is sooner) **Rewards** - 5 winners at 1 ETH each **Requirement** Developers must be currently operating a Twitter bot. Preference should be given to bots that provide useful, amusing, or engaging content. **Voting Guidelines** No self-dealing or conflicts of interest: Purple holders should refrain from voting on sending funds to wallets where any portion of those funds is expected to flow to them, their projects, or anyone they have a close personal or economic relationship with. **Note** If two projects have received the same number of votes, the one submitted earlier will rank higher.
The original deadline was arbitrary; if there is still good work being done we should continue to fund it, especially if it increases the number of unique contributors to the protocol.
The founder allocation is a mechanism that was implemented for the original Nouns DAO as a form of compensation and sybil-resistance. Nouns Builder DAOs inherit this decision, but do not need to abide by it if their trajectory results in early sufficient decentralization. With >75% unique holders I feel as though we have mitigated the risk of a treasury drain and can therefore turn off the Founder Allocation.
While I think that the idea is interesting, I don't believe that Purple is uniquely suited to fund this proposal. What I would need to see changed to reconsider: - A usable prototype - A convincing explanation of why this is a public good that can't be funded via a traditional for-profit funding model
Like the idea; disagree with the funding mechanism. I am concerned with the precedent of funding a solo developer in residence program that becomes a popularity contest. Instead, I think we should encourage projects to apply via regular Prop House rounds. I see this proposal as a symptom of our lack of regular public funding and would prefer to focus our energy & ETH on regular Prop House and retroactive funding rounds.
Nouns Builder Upgrade v1.2.0 2023-02-19&&

Summary

This proposal upgrades the DAO to V1.2 to add several features, improvements and bug fixes.

Airdrop

Ability for DAOs to assign minters and airdrop tokens.

Getting updates posted directly to the Farcaster protocol will increase visibility of Purple and improve our ability to recruit new members. The success of the #purple-botupdates channel has increased my confidence that this type of update moves the needle in terms of discoverability and participation.
Although I agree that physical events are a useful way to proliferate Farcaster, I am not strongly convinced that this is something uniquely suited to Purple. I would encourage us to focus more on the direct funding on individuals, which is much higher leverage than a one-time event in a mostly U.S. demographic.
I do not think that this expense directly serves the Purple mission. We have to be willing to say "no" to things that are not core to the proliferation of the ecosystem. If this purchase goes through, we will need to spend a non-trivial amount of time evaluating BuilderDAO proposals and voting using the Purple token. It's a distraction and we should be very, very wary of distractions.
I'm in support of things we can do on the margin to increase the # of unique contributors to the FC repo. This feels like the perfect use for the treasury. Small grants have a direct impact on increasing the velocity of the Hubs launch by helping incentivize developers to tackle thankless issues. It also has the nice benefit of letting us work directly with the MM team so we don't need to make a technical assessment and can instead focus on capital allocation.
